This isn't a new phenomenon. The tech industry has always been a landscape of rapid evolution, where skills can become obsolete quickly and the pressure to constantly upskill is relentless. Burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress, is a well-documented occupational hazard. What’s different now is the perceived catalyst and amplifier: artificial intelligence. The same tools that promise to boost productivity and unlock new creative potential are also, for some, contributing to a sense of displacement and obsolescence. It's a paradox that demands closer examination, especially for those navigating careers in this dynamic field.

The question “So, how are we doing?” needs to be reframed. It’s not just about individual performance or skill relevance. It means fostering a culture that values adaptability and lifelong learning, not just technical mastery.

Furthermore, we need to have honest conversations about the ethical implications of AI in the workplace. How do we ensure that AI tools augment human capabilities rather than replace them entirely? How do we distribute the benefits of AI-driven productivity gains equitably? These are not purely technical questions; they are deeply human and societal ones that require thoughtful consideration and proactive solutions. The alarm bells I’m hearing are a call to action, a reminder that technology, however advanced, is ultimately a tool created and utilized by humans, and its development must serve human well-being.

The past two and a half years have shown me that life is a continuous process of change and adaptation. The tech industry, now more than ever, demands this adaptability. The challenge is to navigate this era of AI transformation not by succumbing to burnout and obsolescence, but by actively shaping a future where human ingenuity and AI capabilities coexist and mutually enhance each other. The question is no longer just about keeping up, but about evolving consciously and collaboratively.
